About the Rent Program

The Alameda Rent Program was created to implement the City’s Rent Ordinance(PDF, 267KB) through education, community engagement and collaboration to promote equity and stability in the rental market.

The Rent Ordinance applies to approximately 15,000 rental units in the City of Alameda. The ordinance:

  • Prevents landlords from terminating a tenancy except for certain allowable grounds, and requires a relocation payment in cases where the termination is not the fault of the tenant.
  • Imposes a limit on annual rent increases for most rental units in the City.
  • Requires landlords to register all rental units with the Rent Program and pay an annual program fee.
