Change in Enforcement of Relocation Rent Increase Requirement

In compliance with the recent California Court of Appeal decision in California Apartment Association v. City of Pasadena, the City of Alameda Rent Program will no longer enforce Alameda Municipal Code Section 6-58.85(A)(ii).

Adjusted Relocation Payments Effective July 1, 2025

Alameda’s Rent Ordinance prevents landlords from terminating a tenancy except for certain allowable grounds and requires a relocation payment in circumstances that are not the fault of the tenant. Amounts for these relocation payments were established by City Council resolution and are adjusted annually based on a component of the Consumer Price Index (CPI)

Annual Program Fees for FY25-26

The Alameda Rent Program has announced the annual program fees for fiscal year 2025-2026. Landlords pay an annual program fee to the City to cover the costs to provide and administer the Rent Program. Fee amounts are updated annually in accordance with Resolution 15771.

New Reimbursement Policy Regulation

The City of Alameda Rent Program has introduced Rent Control Ordinance Regulation 25-01, aimed at ensuring compliance with rent control laws while balancing fairness for both landlords and tenants. The new regulation, effective April 1, 2025, outlines steps for landlords to correct invalid rent increases without facing excessive penalties.

Comment Period Extended on Rent Program's Reimbursement Policy

The Rent Program is accepting feedback on proposed changes to a longstanding policy addressing the steps landlords must take to demonstrate compliance with the City's Rent Ordinance after collecting rent in excess of what is allowed. Community members are welcome to submit written comments through February 14, 2025.
